James Joseph Prestel

James Joseph "Jim" Prestel passed away on August 24, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on July 15, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, Jim later made his home in Vancouver, Washington. Jim proudly joined the United States Marine Corps and served for three years. After his military service, he worked alongside his father at Ohio Precision. He later became a bread deliveryman for Oroweat Bread, where he worked for 19 years. Jim and his wife, Virginia, were also owners of Interstate Batteries in Eureka, California. After retiring, Jim and Virginia embraced life on the road, traveling by RV and taking on various jobs along the way. Through their travels, they explored new places and made many friends. For many years, Jim was part of a walking group known as the Ospreys. He averaged three miles a day, five days a week - and, just as importantly, enjoyed the coffee and pastry that followed. Jim loved his family and friends deeply. His jokes, warm smile, and caring spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Jim is survived by his wife, Virginia Prestel; his children, James Prestel (Rebekah), Lisa Prestel (favorite daughter), and Gregory Prestel; his stepchildren, Mark Hubert (Catarina), David Hubert, and Paula Hopkins (Chris); his sisters, Phyllis Edington and Diane Phillips; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Bertha Prestel, and his sister, Beverly Kenny. A military graveside service will be held Monday, August 31, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Avenue, Vancouver, Washington 98684. A reception will follow at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13600 SE McGillivray Boulevard, Vancouver, Washington 98684. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to PeaceHealth Hospice, 5400 MacArthur Boulevard, Vancouver, Washington 98661.
