Emily R. Thompson

Emily R. Thompson (née Green), a vibrant spirit full of faith, wit, and style, passed away onAugust 15, 2024, in Vancouver, WA, at the age of 93. Born on April 25, 1931, in the Garden District of New Orleans, Emily was the seventh of eightchildren and the youngest daughter of Beatrice Gardner and Edward Green. Her family andfriends affectionately called her "Tootsie," a nickname that stayed with her throughout her life.A true child of New Orleans, Emily grew up with a passion for dancing, earning her the title of"my dancing daughter" from her doting father. As a teenager, she attended the historic GilbertAcademy, New Orleans' elite school for young Black students seeking a college preparatoryeducation. Outside the classroom, Emily could be found taking meals at her favorite place to eatand mingle, the famous Dooky Chase's. In 1949, Emily's life took a new direction when she moved to Maywood, IL, to assist her sisterMarion and brother-in-law with their business venture. It was there that she met Archie LeeThompson, Sr., whom she married on March 6, 1950. The couple was blessed with two sons,Archie Lee, Jr. and Steven Brian. Emily was a proud resident of Maywood for over six decades, with 40 years spent at the sameaddress. As her faith flourished in the village, she became a member of the local AME church,Canaan AME. Not one to miss a chance to entertain, she frequently opened her home to fellowMaywood residents. Family, friends and neighbors knew that they could always stop by theThompson household for some good food and good drink. Emily was especially known for thebig pots of seafood gumbo she cooked on the holidays. In 2009, Emily and Archie Sr. moved to Westmont, IL. A few years after Archie Sr.'s passing in2012, Emily relocated to Vancouver, WA, to be closer to her eldest son. Despite the distance,her heart remained in Maywood, and she continued to ask about village happenings well intoher later years. Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Lee Thompson, Sr.; her parents, BeatriceGreen (née Gardner) and Edward Green; siblings Lois Collins, Mae Thomas, Marion Green-Draper, Edward Green, Jr., Doris Boullt, and Calvin Green. She leaves behind a loving family tocherish her memory: sons Archie Lee Thompson, Jr. (wife Evelyn) and Steven Brian Thompson(wife Monique); 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Emily's legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be greatlymissed.
