SHIRLEY AMOS CHRISTIE July 8, 1922 ~ May 5, 2012 "Amos was a sweet, kind, loving man, who never met a stranger and would always lend a hand." Shirley Amos Christie went home to be with the Lord on May 5th, two months shy of his 90th birthday. Born July 8, 1922 in Sugar Creek, MO, Amos was the sixth of eight children born to Robert (Babe) and Nona Bearl (Hamilton) Christie. Amos married Bettie Lavon (Bonnett) on June 21, 1944 in Troy, KS. They had four children, Shirley (Leon) Fagin, Robert Earl (deceased), Diana (Earl) Bliss, and Ronda (Ted) Schelvan. Additionally over the years they were foster parents to 37 children. Amos and Bettie moved to Portland, OR in 1948, then to Vancouver, WA in 1968, and finally settling in the "big red barn" in Battle Ground, WA in 1975. Through the years Amos farmed with his dad and brothers, worked construction, at one time even owning his own dump truck. When he retired Amos was a truck hostler for System 99 trucking in Portland. Always the country boy at heart, Amos liked to raise Black Angus cattle. He enjoyed walking to the giant oak tree (which he considered a "show piece" of the property) with his dog Mitzi. Amos was a member of the VIP Classic car club where he and Bettie liked to share their matching 55 Chevy Bel-Airs at car shows. After retirement Amos and Bettie enjoyed "sno-birding" to southern Texas. He also enjoyed making macram lawn chairs, working word search puzzles, crafting jigsaw puzzles and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Amos loved his family. He was proud of his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. He always ended the evening with "love you". He will be deeply and forever missed. Amos is survived by his wife of 67 years; his daughters and sons-in-law; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Risdon and Lorraine Christie of Union Star, MO; sister and brother-in-law, Katie and Guy Taylor of St. Joseph, MO; sister-in-law, Lucille Christie of Portland, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son; son-in-law, Clyde Frakes; his parents; four brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Mon., May 14th, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
