Robert B. Faust

Dr. Robert B. Faust, M.D., a distinguished ENT physician and dedicated member of the United States Navy, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 92 on October 28, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, dedication, humility, love, and devotion to his family. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maureen Faust; their children, Sue (Tim) Schubert, Jim (Celeste) Faust, Christie (Tom) Elliott, Julie (Matthew) Ouimet, and Cathy (Mark) Mollandor; and grandchildren Katie Lazzini (Steven), Michele Champlin (Jon), Mary Schubert, Andrew Schubert (Abigail); Lindzey Faust Boguz (Kyle) and Brianna Sayre (Chase); Lauren, Blake, and Kyle Elliott; Allie, Percy, and Clara Ouimet; and Jonathan and Sarah Mollandor. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Gabriel, Joseph, and Stella Lazzini; Jeremiah and Jude Champlin; and Luke Schubert; as well as his sister, Carol Robinson, and many cherished nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Helen Faust, and his brothers, Victor and Richard. Bob was born on October 22, 1932, in Jamestown, ND, to Helen Mae Blakeslee and Victor Bernard Faust. He grew up in Atkinson, NE, and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Atkinson. As the first in his family to attend college, Bob began his journey in medicine at Texas A&M University and continued his education at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, earning his medical degree in 1958. In 1961, while working at Salem State Hospital, he met his "brown-eyed beauty," nurse Maureen Novak of Klamath Falls, OR, who would become his wife six months later and the mother of his five children. Bob completed his residency in Otolaryngology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego. During his career with the United States Navy, Bob and his family were stationed in San Diego, Guam, and Washington State, where he served as Chief of the ENT Department at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerton. In 1971, he settled with his family in Vancouver, WA, where he continued his service as a Navy reservist until his retirement in 1992, having attained the rank of Captain in the Medical Corps. He honorably served for 31 years-10 years on active duty and 21 years in active reserves-as a medical officer and Navy-trained ENT doctor. Upon moving to Vancouver, he opened his private Ear, Nose, and Throat practice, providing expert and compassionate care to his patients. Bob held various esteemed positions throughout his career, including attending surgeon at Vancouver Memorial and St. Joseph Community Hospitals. He served as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Oregon's Department of Otolaryngology from 1971 to 1976, shaping the next generation of physicians and earning the affection of patients and staff alike. Throughout his professional life, Bob was an active member of several medical associations, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology, where he was honored as a Fellow. Beyond his medical career, where he found great joy in caring for his patients, Bob was known for his love of family and friends, as well as his commitment to his community and church. A lifelong Catholic, his love for God and his faith were evident in how he lived his life. After retiring from his private practice in 1998, he continued serving others by volunteering at the Vancouver Free Clinic and then at Medical Teams International for another ten years. He proudly served a term as President of the Parents Club at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, where his children attended, and he and his family were parishioners for many years. He also faithfully served as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob led a purpose-driven life, and his sense of responsibility, positivity, honesty, and witty sense of humor inspired those who knew him. He had a deep appreciation for the beauty in life-whether it was the vibrant colors of flowers, the breathtaking scenery of nature, animals, babies, or the people who brought him joy. He expressed this love through his passion for photography. He often said, "The greatest gift you can give your children is to love their mother," and he lived by those words. The love he shared with Maureen was truly remarkable, a testament to a bond and example that will be cherished for generations. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, located at 17010 NE 9th Street, Vancouver, WA 98684. A rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m., just prior to the service, in the sanctuary. There will be a reception afterward in the parish hall, where memories of Bob will be shared. The family would like to thank PeaceHealth Hospice for their loving, compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Bob's favorite charities: the Alzheimer's Association, St. Vincent DePaul, PeaceHealth Hospice, or Medical Teams International, honoring his commitment to healthcare and community service. Bob's legacy will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life and career. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
