Robert Eugene Culpepper

Robert Eugene Culpepper Robert passed away at his home during the night of November 26, 2017. Robert was born in Quantico, Virginia to Eleanor L. (Hart) and Carlton M. Culpepper. He was the fourth of six children. As a child he and his family lived in Virginia, Oklahoma, and California; the settling in Portland, Oregon from 1962. Robert graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1968. He took some classes at Portland Community College and then enlisted in the Navy - spending time on submarine duty. He returned to Portland after his discharge and lived in Portland and Vancouver, Washington for the rest of his life. Robert loved music of all kinds. He fell in love with folk music and followed local musicians. In his 20s and 30s you could often find him where folk music and sea shanties were being played -- and he was dancing the jigs and folk dances with the best of them. He became a member of SCA - the Society of Creative Anachronism. He loved being involved in this society and became "Baron Robert MacFlandery". In his SCA costumes he participated in countless events making even more friends (and family). Baron Robert and some of his SCA friends ran the the Dun Cow Inn which was a fixture at SCA events around the West for years. Even after poor health limited his activities, he maintained his ties to his family and friends in the SCA. Robert worked at various jobs throughout his life, but the bulk of his time was spent working for the CIty of Portland Maintenance Bureau. He was on disability retirement from 1990 on. Though physically limited by his health problems, Robert never lost his special spirit and joy of life. His loving nature is now foremost in the memories of his family and many friends. He is survived by his family: brothers and sisters-in-law David C. and Marie Culpepper, James C. and Carol Culpepper; sisters Wanda L. Culpepper and Martha E. Rose; nieces Larissa Doty and Danielle Culpepper, and two great-nieces (Emma and Hannah). He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He will be dearly missed by all. Robert will be interned at Willamette National Cemetery. The family is planning to have a memorial service/gathering for Robert after the first of the year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
