Meta Mae Nagel

META MAE (BLAND) NAGEL May 31, 1924 ~ July 27, 2011 Meta Mae Nagel, 87, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2011 at Esperanza Adult Care Home in Vancouver, WA. She was born May 31, 1924. Meta and her brother, Garth, were raised by their parents, Moritz and Lydia "Dollie" Schimelpfenig in Sara, WA. Meta graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1942 and moved to downtown Vancouver to work in the Vancouver Barracks finance office during World War II. Meta met and married Jack Bland in 1946 and they had three children together. She lost her first husband, Jack, all too soon in March 1976. Meta was fortunate to have found love a second time and married Merlyn Nagel in 1977. In their years together, Meta and Merlyn traveled to Hawaii, Jamaica, Washington D.C. and other places on the east coast. Merlyn passed away in April 2004. Meta worked at Salmon Creek Elementary School for 25 years as a staff assistant. She was a very social person and had many friends. Meta was a fabulous cook and loved cooking for our family gatherings. She also loved gardening and at one time had 1, 000 gladiolus. Meta was a wonderful seamstress and sewed prom dresses and bridesmaids dresses for her daughters. Meta is survived by her brother, Garth Schimelpfenig; daughters, Sandi Roberts (Dave) and Debbie Stewart (Alan); son, Dan Bland (Cindy), all of Vancouver; five grandchildren, Angela Davis of Camas, WA, Jamee Shermer of Vancouver, Taylor Bland of Vancouver, Colin Stewart of Kongiganak, AK, and Nick Stewart of Cheney, WA; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Sydney Davis. The family would like to thank all of the exceptional care givers at Esperanza for the wonderful care that was given to Meta in the last 3 1/2 years of her life. A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver at 12:30 p.m. on Wed., Aug. 3, 2011. Viewing will be available on Tues., Aug. 2, 2011 and before and after the memorial service on Aug. 3, 2011. In lieu of flowers, a tax deductible donation can be made in memory of Meta Nagel for a park bench at the new North Salmon Creek Chinook Park. Donations can be made at the Salmon Creek IQ Credit Union, 13505 NE 10th Ave., Vancouver, WA 98685 to the "Meta Nagel Memorial Fund".
