Edward Carlos Tandberg

Edward "Ed" Carlos Tandberg, age 75, died of heart disease and recently diagnosed lung cancer on December 20th, 2018, in Vancouver, Washington. Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karren; his daughter Dawn Thompson and son-in-law Chris and son Ed Tandberg II; Grandson Ryan Thompson and wife Alla, and great-grandsons Daniel and John Thompson. He is also survived by brothers Floyd Walseth (wife Helen), Arne Tandberg (wife Cheri), and sisters Karla Swenson (husband Steve) and Brenda Heward (husband Roger). Ed is also survived by Shaw family in-laws: Nancy Shaw, Linda and Glenn Ray, Steve and Deanna Shaw, Christine Sonntag, Jennifer and Cliff Gilbert, Lance and Sabrina Shaw, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Joseph Tandberg (and wife Janie), and his beloved fourteen year old great-grandson Samuel Thompson this past August 30th. Ed was born on October 19, 1943 in Noonan, North Dakota to parents Erling "Carl" and Hazel Tandberg. He moved with his family to the Vancouver area in the mid-40's and graduated from Battle Ground High School. Ed served in the Army National Guard for five years, Honorably Discharged as Sergeant. As a youth, Ed had a fourteen mile daily rural paper route with The Columbian Newspaper, and worked with his Dad on a small dairy farm in Brush Prairie. Ed's carpentry career spanned over fifty years, beginning when he was seven, pulling nails from recycled boards for a house his parents built in the Vancouver Burton area. After Carpenter Apprentice School, he formed a framing partnership with his cousin, Monte Walseth, T & W Framers. In the 1970's he was self-employed as a Home Builder Contractor, and a craftsman proud of his work. He also built in-ground Hallmark Pools, and worked at Transamerica Intermodal Maintenance. The last 29 years of Ed's career was spent working at Bonneville Power Administration doing Carpentry Construction in the western states. Ed retired as Carpenter Foreman III in December 2012. Ed built his family home forty years ago on Mt. Norway in Washougal, WA. He enjoyed working on various projects around his home throughout the years. His Norwegian heritage was very important to him, so it was a real joy in 2002 when he was able to travel to Norway and other Scandinavian countries with his wife and friends. Ed and Karren spent every anniversary at the coast, with the exception of several trips to National Parks and Victoria, B.C. He enjoyed fishing in Alaska, attending the Iditarod dog sled race, antiquing for books, records and old tools, and walking his perfect yellow lab Annalynn. Ed had a keen mind and memory for politics, was conservative in the protection of our Nation's founding freedoms, and had a very strong work ethic. He was a gentle man, and an easy soul with his family and friends. Ed was a member of the American Legion, and Vancouver Sons of Norway Lodge. Please join the family for a Celebration of Ed's life 2:00 p.m. January 19, 2019 at New Hope Foursquare Church,1801 Daniels St, Vancouver, WA followed immediately by a Reception Luncheon at nearby Sons of Norway Lodge, 2400 Grant St. Ed was interred at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on December 29, 2018. The family greatly appreciates and thanks the caring staff at Peace Health SW Medical Center where Ed spent his final month of life.
